BARA PRESIDENT'S REPORT

From The President's Desk of George KC6KGH

As you've noticed, lately I've put some motivational thoughts and ideas out there for you to think about and take ahold of.Last Month I mentioned Amateur Operator Preparedness, touching on some serious points to ponder. My personal belief is that being prepared is More than what's being touched on in the Amateur Radio Hobby.. In our tightly-wound society today with War being a part of our daily lives.Yes, we are still in a War, against Terrorism around the world and at home.
I pose this question to you today. As a Ham Operator, how can we prepare for the worst, such as a Terrorist Attack.Last month I mentioned Natural Disaster at its worst. Well, what about an Un-natural Disaster? Such as: a N.E.M.P. Or a Nuclear ElecroMagnetic Pulse creating a release of such energy that circuits whether on or not, connected or unconnected, would Literally "FRY."Can we harden our Hamshacks and our Equipment Guaranteeing Communication?? The answer is emphatically "YES!"All it takes is a FARADAY ROOM, CAGE, OR BOX,Oftentimes using material that is not as expensive as you may think. Such as a Good Grade of Aluminum Foil, Mylar Sheeting, commonly referred to as "Space Blankets." And several well-placed Ground rods.
Immediate information from the Library, or the Internet can give you some great ideas, and keep the cost down as well. Our Government for some reason never offers this type of information for the public. President Obama recently said that in case of a Nuclear Disaster, the Help we need might come after several weeks. I Personally don't want to wait that long. The common threat of N.E.M.P. is real....and very well could be a reality with many Nations at this time clamouring to become a Nuclear State.
It doesn't hurt to make ourselves prepared enough to preserve some semblence of a Communications Infrastructure, does it?This is just something to work on this Month as we get close to Field Day. Think about it! Let's EMP Proof the Club Tailer.
Hope to see each and everyone of you at the meeting. 73' George KC6KGH....BARA President.
